Tracing Back to the Butterfly

One idea I have explored a bit on this site in the past is Chaos Theory, which is often paired with the classic scenario of the butterfly in South America which creates a tornado in the Midwest with a flap of its wings because everything is indirectly related. In this post, I'll briefly explain how we can apply this philosophy to our lives to gain a bit of amusement and awe on a daily basis.

One day, you're walking through a new part of town and you see a poster advertising a specific product. It intrigues you and you briefly type the name on the notes application of your phone. When you arrive home, you paste the name into Google but as you are trying to find the object of interest, an advertisement appears on the side which captures your attention. You click on it to briefly entertain your interest and quickly find out that it is a publicity from a company seeking virtual employment. The name sounds familiar and suddenly you remember that a close friend has worked there before, so you send your application over. After months of endless job rejections, you are finally selected and find happiness from this new position.

The origin of this success might initially appear to have emerged from the advertisement on Google, but in reality, it goes far deeper. Not only did you decide to walk through a new part of town with that particular poster, but no circumstances interceded your observation of the product. By this I mean that the person who decided to put up that poster didn't get a flat tire the morning of, or the wind wasn't too strong to the point that it blew down the paper before you got to it. You could have turned to the right a block before, for all we know. What I'm trying to say is that every event which happens in life is the product of countless coincidental factors which multiply exponentially by the second and lead to a reality which changes every millisecond.

The scenario outlined above is purely fictional, and I don't want to inveigle you to do it with everything that transpires in your life, but it's a fun exercise every once in a while to remind you that every immense joy and sorrow is the result of an indescribable series of connected events. Hopefully this gives you a little bit of awe when you think about it, since Chaos Theory is certainly one of the most remarkable philosophical ideas to ever be named in my opinion!
